Summary

While not a page turner, the author created characters you came to care about and a story well told。 It was long, but worth the read。

Theresa Nardi

Well done but it needed an editor, too long by at least 100 pages!

Juan David

This is easily my favorite book of the year。 The craftsmanship involved in writing this book was masterful。

I had the same issue with The Lincoln Highway that I had with A Gentleman in Moscow。 I find Amor Towles' storytelling uneven, and there are times while reading one of his books that I disengage。 Telling the story from varying points of view as in The Lincoln Highway often felt gimmicky when, for example, a chapter focusing on one character ended and was picked-up in the next chapter by a different character。 Often the story would then backtrack and fill in details (from another character's point I had the same issue with The Lincoln Highway that I had with A Gentleman in Moscow。 I find Amor Towles' storytelling uneven, and there are times while reading one of his books that I disengage。 Telling the story from varying points of view as in The Lincoln Highway often felt gimmicky when, for example, a chapter focusing on one character ended and was picked-up in the next chapter by a different character。 Often the story would then backtrack and fill in details (from another character's point of view) that I didn't believe added to the narrative。Certain characters, and therefore certain chapters, were more compelling than others。 Duchess is a difficult character, and I rarely connected with him。 The fact that Towles told Duchess' story from first person (one of only two characters) made him more problematic for me, not less。 。。。more

Very well written and captivating。。but couldn’t stand Duchess。 Emmett’s passivity and lack of common sense irritated me from the beginning, in allowing Duchess back into his life。 Clever, thought provoking ending

Make it 3 hrs in and couldn’t get into it。

After reading only two of Amor Towles's novels, I was nearly ready to claim him among my favorite modern authors; The Lincoln Highway solidified it。 While this novel may not have reached quite the same level of affection as the first two I read (purely personal preference), I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 Towles is a beautiful writer and an exemplary storyteller。 This work shows he's also a versatile one。This book was reminiscent of something that would be on a high school reading list (and I sa After reading only two of Amor Towles's novels, I was nearly ready to claim him among my favorite modern authors; The Lincoln Highway solidified it。 While this novel may not have reached quite the same level of affection as the first two I read (purely personal preference), I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 Towles is a beautiful writer and an exemplary storyteller。 This work shows he's also a versatile one。This book was reminiscent of something that would be on a high school reading list (and I say that in the best way); it's a great American coming-of-age story following four young boys who seem to run into adventure after adventure (often despite their best laid plans)。 Their story is complex, filled with disappointments, messiness, and tricks, but it also has heart, resilience, and light。 I also loved how expertly Towles wove Billy's compendium of adventurers into the boys' story。 It made for a compelling thread throughout the novel。So, despite Duchess having me ready to pull my hair out at each turn, The Lincoln Highway is a joyride。 4。5 stars。 。。。more

Fantastic book!

I'm not entirely sure how to categorize this。。。tragicomedy? an epic? Either way, I devoured this over the weekend。 It's a compelling multi-voice narrative with vivid characters。 I'm not entirely sure how to categorize this。。。tragicomedy? an epic? An ending worthy of discussion。

This is a good story, told well。 Do try the recipe for Fettuccine Mio Amore that Duchess prepares for the group near the end of the book。 I tried it with turkey bacon -- delicious! You can find it online。

Another masterpiece by Mr。 Towles!Mr。 Towels has written was is sure to be (another) modern classic! Love the story, the characters, the history。 The nearly 600 pages breezed by。 HIGHLY recommend! Loved it!

I loved 'A Gentleman in Moscow' so much that it made me slightly apprehensive about reading another book by Towles。 How could it possibly match up? Wouldn't I be setting myself up for the disappointment of a lesser read? This is another terrific novel from Towles。 It's always great reading a book that you are enjoying so much, and this was an absolute pleasure。 I loved 'A Gentleman in Moscow' so much that it made me slightly apprehensive about reading another book by Towles。 How could it possibly match up? The good thing about this book is that it is easy to read, clear prose, uncomplicated sentence structure, and even if you doze off reading it the night before, you can simply go on several chapters later next day without being afraid of having missed something。 The bad news is that the book is deathly boring! I absolutely love Amor Towles’ writing。 I have read A Gentleman In Moscow, and am currently reading Rules of Civility。 I would have to say that he is my favorite and look forward to, hopefully, more to come。

Julie Rotelli

Wonderful writing, but so much of this book is unnecessary and irrelevant。 The ending made me mad and somehow felt rushed, despite hundreds of pages of side stories and bloated storylines。

Hope Barker

Wow。 What an amazing adventure and what interesting people I got to know along the way! I loved every minute of this book。

I loved Towles "Rules of Civility。" I haven't read his "A Gentleman in Moscow。" This book was not what I was expecting, but that might be a good thing。Multiple narrators sometimes pose a problem for me and for this book that was true at the beginning until I got used to it。 The story itself is quite interesting and involved although told in segments that might each be considered a short story itself。 Every time I thought the plot had too many coincidences to be believable, someone would recall a I loved Towles "Rules of Civility。" I haven't read his "A Gentleman in Moscow。" This book was not what I was expecting, but that might be a good thing。Multiple narrators sometimes pose a problem for me and for this book that was true at the beginning until I got used to it。 The story itself is quite interesting and involved although told in segments that might each be considered a short story itself。 Every time I thought the plot had too many coincidences to be believable, someone would recall a prior conversation that explained why they knew the answer。 In the end, I thought this was pretty good。 Having seven hours in the car (each way) to and from vacation was the push I needed to finish。 。。。more

When a book makes you laugh or express surprise as often as this one, you don't want it to end。 I loved some of the character musings: "。。。she had tucked the covers so tightly that you could see the corners of the mattress through the surface of the blanket, the way you can see Jane Russell through the surface of her sweater。" Only those of us of a certain age would get that, and I did。 Or: "But in order to read a gas station map, you have to unfold and unfold and unfold it until the Pacific Oce When a book makes you laugh or express surprise as often as this one, you don't want it to end。 I loved some of the character musings: "。。。she had tucked the covers so tightly that you could see the corners of the mattress through the surface of the blanket, the way you can see Jane Russell through the surface of her sweater。" Only those of us of a certain age would get that, and I did。 Or: "But in order to read a gas station map, you have to unfold and unfold and unfold it until the Pacific Ocean is up against the gear shift and the Atlantic Ocean is lapping at the passenger-side door。" So true。 Or: "From the standpoint of ambience, the good people at Howard Johnson's had decided to carry the colors of their well-known rooftop into the restaurant by dressing the booths in bright orange and the waitresses in bright blue--despite the fact that the combination of orange and blue hasn't been known to stimulate an appetite since the beginning of time。" This book was chock-a-block with perfectly articulated everyday experiences like this。 Great story。 Great writing。 Wonderfully developed characters。 I would read this book again。 。。。more
